Good to Know

  • Danny announces newcomers on his home turf with a few investigative barks. It passes within minutes, and away from Baan Maa he greets strangers like old friends.
  • He is a talented jumper and can use nearby objects to gain extra height, so his garden needs to be properly secure.
  • He isn't keen on very dominant dogs and can play a little roughly with smaller dogs, so a good personality match matters more than size.
  • Patience around treats is his weak spot. He may jump up when food is handed out, and his wait command is still being worked on.

Danny's Rescue Story

Danny has been a Baan Maa boy almost his entire life. When he was around ten days old, we found his mum at one of our old community feeding points with a badly injured eye, and she led us back to her nine tiny puppies. She needed surgery to remove the damaged eye and around three weeks to recover, far too long to leave ten-day-old puppies on the street, so the whole family came to Baan Maa. We supported the puppies with extra milk while she recovered, and by the time she was ready to return, they had spent such an important part of their early development with us that going back to the street was no longer safe. Danny grew up here, and his brother Care Bear is still here with him today.

About Danny

Danny is a bit of a character. He loves people, loves children and loves attention, but when someone new arrives at Baan Maa he also feels the need to announce their presence. He'll wander over barking, accept a pat, step backwards and bark again, then stare at you as though he can't understand why you've stopped petting him. We're fairly sure Danny just likes the sound of his own voice. Give him a few minutes and the barking disappears, leaving an affectionate, playful dog who wants to be involved in whatever you're doing. Take him away from Baan Maa and he's completely different: at adoption events he'll happily approach strangers as though they've been friends for years. He's confident, independent, affectionate, silly, curious, sensitive and playful, with one very distinctive feature: a little wispy mohawk on top of his head.

The Full Profile

Life with Danny
Danny likes to be involved. His day usually starts around 6:30am with some play before his morning walk, where he'll run, play and happily get into the water. Back at Baan Maa it's time for a nap on one of the beds or the artificial grass, then another game of fetch with staff or the other dogs. At dinner time he heads to his kennel and waits for his food. Afterwards, if you're going somewhere, Danny would very much like to know why he hasn't been invited. He needs at least an hour of exercise every day and would happily take more. He loves balls and will chase them enthusiastically until he decides the game is over, at which point he has been known to hide the ball so nobody else can have it.
People
Danny loves being around people, though he doesn't necessarily greet everyone quietly. At home, a stranger is likely to get a few investigative barks before Danny decides they're acceptable. Children are another matter entirely: he loves them. Playing with kids is one of his favourite things, and Luca is his favourite person at Baan Maa.
Other Animals
With dogs, Danny is generally very social. He plays well with friendly males and females, is respectful around larger dogs and particularly respectful of older dogs. Very dominant dogs aren't his cup of tea, and he can play a little roughly with smaller dogs, so we'd want any dog sibling to be a good personality match rather than assuming size alone decides compatibility. He hasn't been tested with cats.
Training
Danny has a really good foundation for moving into a home. He is toilet trained, lead trained and crate trained, good in the car, good with recall and familiar with basic commands. His biggest weakness is patience when food is involved. If treats are being handed out, he can become convinced he'll be forgotten and may jump up to make sure that injustice doesn't happen. We're working on his wait command, and his adopter should continue reinforcing his existing training. He is comfortable around traffic and motorbikes. Thunder and fireworks are less popular and he'll look to his people for reassurance when things get loud. He hasn't had much experience with large crowds. He isn't enthusiastic about vet visits, grooming or baths, but accepts them without aggression, and we're still desensitising him to having his paws handled.

Dogs moving into a new home often regress a little at first, even on things they'd already learned. That's normal, not a step backwards - a bit of patience and the same consistent routine soon has them back on track.

Health
Danny is vaccinated and sterilised, and in good health with no known allergies, previous injuries, medication, mobility problems or ongoing medical needs. He is not microchipped. He has an unusual coat: much of it is more hair-like than typical dog fur, and he sheds very little. We wouldn't promise he's hypoallergenic, but people who want a dog who leaves less hair around the house may appreciate him.
Ideal Home
Danny would love a house with a secure garden and a family who actually includes him in their lives. He wants walks, outings, games in the garden and the chance to tag along, not a home where his daily involvement consists of watching everyone leave through the window. He's particularly appealing as a family dog because of how much he enjoys children; we can easily imagine him playing outside with them before coming in to settle down with the family. He could live with another compatible dog and doesn't need a canine companion for confidence. We'd simply avoid pairing him with a particularly dominant dog. He could suit families with children, first-time dog owners, experienced owners, active households, retired owners able to meet his exercise needs, or someone working from home.

Might not be the best match if...

Despite his confidence, a very busy household with a constant stream of unfamiliar people probably isn't ideal. Danny needs a few minutes to assess newcomers on his own territory, and repeating that all day could become stressful for him.

Fun Fact

Danny has a hidden talent: parkour. He can jump remarkably high and, if an obstacle is too tall to clear directly, he's apparently capable of using nearby objects to give himself extra height. His other signature move is considerably less athletic: he'll approach you for a pat, enjoy it, step backwards, realise you've stopped, step forwards again and repeat the entire process.

Perfect Day

A walk and a good run with his friends, preferably with some water to splash around in. Then home for fetch and chase, something delicious to chew and a nap somewhere cool. Once he's recharged, another game, followed by a dinner he'll wolf down, an evening walk and finally bed.
